After weeks of working late nights and long days it feels good to finally be able to share the results of that work with you. This was my first installation that was created for something other than the street so I was able to put extra time and effort into making it something special. I couldn't be happier with the results!

I just saw this picture taken by Mr. Target with stick2target.com of my Mary piece in Lisbon. I'm really surprised that she has been running so long (She went up in early September) and looks relatively unharmed.

Seems that she has been recruited to take part in the Occupy movement. One of the 99%! :-) Thanks for the pic Target!

Sometimes wheat pasting can be quite zen-like. Getting away from the city was a great experience, everything seems to slow down on an island. The usual adrenaline rush of pasting up a piece of art in the city was replaced with the relaxed calm of the countryside. Cows don't talk.

As I was editing this video together I realized how strange it is that the pasting part on video seems so slow and boring compared to the fast paced time lapse videos I have created in the past. In reality the painting process is slow (but not boring) and the pasting part is fast and exciting, so I just wanted to point that out.

That said, I hope you enjoy this 2 minute video of my ass.

In 1643, as recounted by friar Diogo das Chagas, the parish of Ribeirinha consisted of 71 homes and 254 inhabitants. A quarter of a century later, the Church of São Mateus da Ribeirinha was constructed, and would remain the center of religious life in the parish until the violent earthquake of July 9, 1998.

The Ribeirinha Lighthouse - Ribeirinha Parish, Faial, Açores

Overlooking the canal, the Ribeirinha lighthouse was one the more important landmarks on the island. It was mentioned in many works of the Portuguese writer Vitorino Nemésio, who wrote the ex-libris of the lighthouse in his work Mau Tempo no Canal. The lighthouse is a square form, covered in white azulejo (tiles); a rectangular base, featuring a central tower. Construction began during the month of May, 1915 and inaugurated in the winter of 1919 (November 1). Its optic (made from crystal) and lantern (partly red) distinguish it as a unique World Heritage artifact. Following the earthquake of 1998, the building was abandoned due to major cracks and deterioration of the internal structure. Following the earthquake, which was centered 5 km off the coast of Ponta da Ribeirinha, the lighthouse was left in ruins. A preemptive demolition of the building in 2001 was abandoned following a campaign of the Liga dos Amigos do Farol (the League of Friends of the Lighthouse). Their objective to preserve and reconstruct the lighthouse has not yet materialized. Meanwhile, the older equipment has been placed in the possession of the Casa do Povo da Ribeirinha.

And another... but this one has a good story.

As I was taking photos of this piece a old lady came up and started asking about the piece in Portuguese. A friend from Lisbon told her that is was by an American artist and she went on to say that it was beautiful and that she loved it. It always gets me when the people that you would least expect to "love" a piece of street art are the people that appreciate it. One of my goals since the start has been to show people that street art can be beautiful and can actually add to the environment rather than take away. Needless to say this woman's comments made my day and made me feel that all of the hard work and travel to get there was worth it. Mission accomplished!

I sent off several Anywhere But Here pieces to Atlanta last year for Living Walls 2010. I was really disappointed because after sending off my hard work I never heard back from them. No photos, nothing...

Living walls 2011 is happening now, so I decided to hit the Googles and see if I could find pics of my work from 2010. I came across this and another shot of the other piece. While i'm really glad they made them up somewhere, the pieces weren't installed to my specifications. They were meant to be an installation, the woman, the schedule and the suitcase as a whole make the piece. As you can see here, its just the woman, not sure what happened to the schedules. Neither was used.

Anyways, I think that this shot still looks great despite not being installed properly. I guess if you want something done right, its best to do it yourself. I wish I could have made it to ATL to do it myself... maybe next year!

About a month ago the luggage went missing from my "Anywhere but Here" piece. It was always a mystery as to what could have happened to it but I always figured that it had most likely been trashed (it wasn't in the best shape when I left it there to begin with).

Well I guess they are both technically new pieces. The Geisha stencils had been forgotten after painting the aluminum sign series several months ago. I found them buried as I was cleaning the studio and decided she should be resurrected on paper.

The inspiration for the piece came from the site itself. Galveston, Texas.

Now for a little history. In 1878, a cast-iron statue of ”Mary, Star of theSea”, was added to the bell tower at St. Mary Cathedral Basilica. Mariners formerly used the lighted crown of the statue as a beacon to guide them into the port of Galveston. During all of Galveston’s hurricanes, and particularly the Great Storm of 1900, many a Galvestonian cast desperate and hopeful glances upward at the figure of Mary, “The Protectoress” of the city.

Passed down Westheimer today and found that a rose had been left on the Geisha sign. I posted the photo to Flickr and a couple hours later got this comment:

"true short stories said: i put the rose there.then i went back the next day and took the sign.if you give a fuck let me know,ill do something about it.props by the way."

Sure enough, passed by again and its gone. The stem of the rose is still there but the bud is gone.

Had allot of fun tonight in the Heights with PR!MO and mata-leão. PR!MO was getting more footage for the Stick 'Em Up documentary and mata-leão is working on a photo book focusing on Houston Street art. 2 exciting projects that I cant wait to see.

Headed out to Galveston today to take advantage of the nice weather. I hadn't been since hurricane Ike hit in 2008 so I wasn't sure what to expect. The downtown was nice but it was a bit like a ghost town. Perfect place for a paste up... lots of old abandoned buildings. Really happy with the results!

QR codes and street art

I recently ran across these QR codes (apparently this is one of the latest trends in Japan) that allow you to embed info that can be retrieved using cell phone cameras (using QR reader software). I really dig this technology and plan on incorporating this into my art in the future. More info on this technology can be found here...

Met up with PR!MO last night so he could film this going up for the Stick em up! documentary. I normally look for dark spots to hide when pasting but he needed light to film so this went up right under a street light. Hopefully he got the shot that he needed. I'm really happy with the way this one came out, the paper seems to blend into the wood which is exactly what I wanted.
