Geisha love?, originally uploaded by 2:12.
Passed down Westheimer today and found that a rose had been left on the Geisha sign. I posted the photo to Flickr and a couple hours later got this comment: "true short stories said: i put the rose there.then i went back the next day and took the sign.if you give a fuck let me know, ill do something about it.props by the way."
Sure enough, passed by again and its gone. The stem of the rose is still there but the bud is gone.
What do you think, should street art be fair game if someone wants to take it OR should it stay on the streets for all to enjoy? Leave a comment and tell me your thoughts!
street art is for street. the fair game is working if its the city that remove it. Not a random person.
ReplyDeleteUltimately its up to the artist right? But to the person that took it... you stole something that was given to the entire community. Isn't part of the idea of street art sharing something creative with all who witness it, for free. Its a selfish act to decide you want it for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI know I would want to take it but I wouldn't. I guess it's part of the process, taking that chance, but I think I'd feel cheated if it was my work.
ReplyDeleteThe person that took your geisha sign should burn in hell!!!
ReplyDeleteAll that time and effort into creating a piece for everyone to see, should not be wasted on some little kids bedroom wall.

Street art belongs to the community and should never be stolen by one selfish person. What's the point of creating this type of art if it will just be taken by the first person that comes across it and likes it. Very wrong.
ReplyDeleteNo way. sharing is sharing. If they liked it so much they should take it. I don't a problem with it.
ReplyDeleteBetter in a house being loved than the trash or ripped down or torn apart.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, a good mix of opinions here. I'm right in between on this one. In a perfect world, the art is made for the street and should stay on the street but since this is reality and not fairytale land I would rather know that someone is enjoying it rather than in the back of a City of Houston truck headed for the trash.
ReplyDeleteI loved doing these signs, they go up quick and painting on metal was allot like painting on a canvas. Although I did my best to stop them from being stolen several of them did go missing. It was a fun experiment but from now on I think I will stick with paper and paste.
A little late with the opinion, but...street art by it's nature is a temporary thing that is often put up on what could be called stolen space. Perhaps something twice stolen is found - and can live on. Can you really steal something that was given away? I would rather it be stolen than buffed.
ReplyDeleteWay late comment: if they want "street art" for their house, they should commission it. Theft plain and simple; from both the artist and the community.
